Troop 58 recently said farewell to a long-time Scouter and member of our scouting family. This was by far the hardest thing I have had to do in close to 25 years as a Scout and Scouter. As I reflected on all who were touched by this Scouter over the years, through 1 Cub Scout pack and 2 Boy Scout troops, I was struck by the sheer magnitude of her impact. In Scouting alone, easily 500 people benefited from this Scouter’s energy, passion, and concern for “the boys.” We often talk about our scouts embodying Scout Spirit as a way of combining the principles of the Scout Oath and Law, but the Spirit of Scouting now has a new meaning for me. Many Scouters have closed events over the years with this simple benediction: “May the Great Scoutmaster of all Scouts be with us until we meet again.” I know we will meet again someday soon, but in the meantime – we’ll carry on as best we can in the Spirit of Scouting.
