Whether it’s a weekend campout\, a challenging hike\, or a skills-based activity\, the outdoors is where Scouts learn\, grow\, and thrive. To lead these activities effectively\, adult leaders need a strong foundation in outdoor skills\, and that’s why we have Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills or IOLS.Why take the training for IOLS?IOLS is the required training course for all Scouts BSA leaders. It’s a requirement for any adult leader to be considered fully trained for their role in a Scouts BSA troop. Without IOLS\, leaders cannot be officially recognized as trained\, which limits their ability to support the troop’s outdoor program fully.Skill Mastery: You’ll learn essential skills like knot tying\, campsite setup\, first aid\, and using a map and compass — all skills needed to help Scouts advance from Tenderfoot to First Class.Expert Guidance: The course is led by experienced instructors who bring years of Scouting knowledge and practical outdoor experience\, providing you with valuable tips and insights.Networking and Growth: IOLS is an incredible opportunity to meet fellow Scouters\, share stories\, and learn from others’ experiences. The connections you make can help you grow within the Scouting movement and provide support as you continue your leadership journey. What are the benefits for you and your Scout Troop?Full Leader Training: Completing IOLS requires full training as a Scout’s BSA leader\, which allows you to effectively support your troop’s program.Confidence in Outdoor Leadership: You’ll gain the confidence to lead Scouts in outdoor activities\, knowing you have the skills and knowledge to handle various situations.Community and Support: By attending IOLS\, you’ll join a network of Scouters who are passionate about the outdoors and eager to share their experiences and knowledge.Investing your time in IOLS is crucial for your personal growth and the success of your troop. It’s a requirement for being a fully trained leader and an amazing opportunity to learn new skills\, build lasting connections\, and become a more effective guide for our Scouts. Join us for IOLS\, and let’s work together to deliver an outstanding outdoor program that helps our Scouts reach their full potential. Registration and Other DetailsCost:                           $40 per BSA Registered ScouterEquipment:                  A list of camping equipment will be provided for registrants. Prerequisites – THESE MUST BE COMPLETED PRIOR TO ARRIVING ON SATURDAY!!Up-to-date Youth Protection TrainingUp to date Hazardous Weather Training        (BSA course SCO_800)Safe Swim Defense                                        (BSA course SCO_801)Safety Afloat                                                    (BSA course SCO_802)These training courses are all available online at my.scouting.org under the “My Training” tab.Participants must provide documentation about completing the online courses; this can be done by:Print the certificates provided by training.scouting.org upon course completion and provide a copy when registering for the training course’s start date.Provide the electronic certificates via e-mail to the course directorAll participants must complete the BSA-Medical-Form-A&B. SUMMARY:Gettysburg - Shadows of 1864 Camporee
DESCRIPTION:Last call for signing up. Deadline 9/2. Only a few mock rifles remain. First come\, first served.Shadows of 1864 CamporeeGettysburg Campout by New Birth of Freedom CouncilPlanning is in full swing for the “Shadows of 1864” Civil War-themed council-wide camporee\, scheduled for September 26-28\, 2025\, just a quarter mile from the historic Gettysburg battlefield. We’re excited to share key details to help your units prepare for this unforgettable experience:All participants will receive an event patch\, and Scouts will be provided with a kepi (a military-style cap) to wear during the event.     •    Camping:  Our event will occur at the historic Schroeder Farm\, featuring a landmark barn built in 1860\, three years before the Battle of Gettysburg. Scouting units will camp on-site in a designated Jamboree-style camping area. Separate camping areas will be allocated for Scouts BSA and Family Camping.    •    Programs: Separate\, age-appropriate activities will be available for Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA\, ensuring a meaningful experience for all.    •    Mock Rifles: Scouts need a mock Springfield rifle for an authentic experience. Pre-cut wood replicas (5′ long) will be available for $10. All orders for pre-cut wood replicas must be received by July 1\, 2025. Templates and instructions for those who wish to make their own from scratch are available below:    ◦    5′ replica template (https://newbirthoffreedom.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Mock-Springfield-Rifle-5-Foot-Template.pdf)    •    Fireworks: The event will feature a spectacular fireworks show. This event draws inspiration from the 2022 joint fall camporee hosted by Battlefield and Heritage Trails Districts at the same location. Nearly 900 Scouts attended the event\, which was later highlighted in Scout Life magazine. For a glimpse of that event\, watch the wrap-up video (https://vimeo.com/769284466).Event Theme The “Shadows of 1864” camporee is based on the Union Army’s desperate need for soldiers following the Battle of Gettysburg. In the spring of 1864\, they launched a recruitment campaign\, which serves as the backdrop for our theme.Activities    •    Scouts BSA and Older Scouts: Participants will be mustered into the Union Army and formed into Companies\, engaging in hands-on activities and inter-unit competitions. Stations will cover various aspects of Civil War soldiering\, including Cavalry\, Medical\, Music\, Cannon Demonstration\, Encampment Organization\, 1860s Games\, and Drill Instructions.Fees$60 campout/$10 rifle Troop58.Zelle@gmail.comBSA Historic Trails Programhttps://newbirthoffreedom.org/gettysburg-heritage-trails-program/
