DESCRIPTION:NCAC Back Country Outdoor Leadership Skills (BCOLS) – Weekend 1 – 9/21 – Heritage Presbyterian 7:30am – 4pmWeekend 2- 10/19-10/20 – Camp Big Mac 7:30am Saturday – 2pm SundayRegistration – https://scoutingevent.com/082-82477″>https://scoutingevent.com/082-82477Back Country Outdoor Leader Skills (BCOLS)Back Country Outdoor Leader Skills (BCOLS) is an optional course offered to adult leaders who have completed the required training in their Scouting program.  This course assists Scouters working with youth in the backcountry by providing the skills necessary to conduct a safe and risk-managed high adventure program in venues outside those supported by BSA infrastructure.  It has been continuously designed to address new and emerging issues\, techniques\, and gear. BCOLS has three key goals:Provide adult leaders with an understanding of safety and risk management issues in the back country environment.Expose adult leaders to interpersonal\, small group dynamics\, and leadership models consistent with National syllabi and curricula.Familiarize adult leaders with the planning processes\, skills\, and equipment necessary to a successful back country adventure. BCOLS consists of two parts:One day-long classroom sessionWorking Together — covers needs and characteristics of the age group; discusses group dynamics and the interpersonal skills needed to build and maintain a high-performance team.Trek Planning and Preparation — covers the detailed preparation and planning that is necessary to a successful Trek and includes risk management\, Leave No Trace principles\, and discussion and displays of the personal and crew equipment used for Trekking\, as well as other Trek tools.Two-day weekend outdoor session provides a mix of skill presentations and hands-on practice.  Activities include Leave No Trace camping skills\, problem solving through initiative games\, the use of bear bags/canisters\, equipment maintenance\, stove maintenance\, water treatment\, menu planning and trail cooking (and clean-up)\, terrain awareness\, health and safety and personal hygiene issues\, hands-on land navigation\, and trail meditations.  Requirements for attending BCOLS:Be registered members of the Boy Scouts of America and age 18 or older.Have completed the basic position-specific training courses for their Scouting role.Be capable of functioning safely in an outdoor environment. All participants are required to complete the Annual Health and Medical Record. I am a MB Counselor for both of these Eagle-required MBs and will work with Scouts who wish to fulfill these requirements by attending this meeting.Please RSVP in TroopTrack and I will reach out with additional details.Note: It is possible to fulfill the public meeting requirements for both the Communication MB and the Citizenship in the Community MB by attending this one meeting — however\, the requirements for each MB are different and must be distinctly fulfilled.The County encourages residents and businesses who wish to offer comment on Dominion Energy’s proposed transmission lines along Route 7 in Loudoun County to attend the State Corporation Commission (SCC) public hearing on Thursday\, September 5\, 2024\, 6:00pm-10:00pm\, at Belmont Ridge Middle School\, 19045 Upper Belmont Place in Leesburg.The SCC is considering a request by Dominion Energy to build the Aspen-Golden (Case #PUR-2024-00032) and Apollo-Twin Creeks electric transmission facilities (Case # PUR-2024-00044). The projects include a new 9.4-mile double circuit overhead transmission line (500 and 230 kilovolt) between the proposed Aspen and Golden substations and other associated infrastructure. The current application locates the proposed above-ground power lines from the area around Goose Creek and Belmont Ridge Road\, along the south side of Route 7\, and parallel to Loudoun County Parkway. Dominion has stated the projects are necessary to maintain electricity reliability for the region.The SCC asks that any member of the public who wishes to provide comment at the September 5 hearing in Leesburg arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the meeting and register with the commission’s bailiff.
